I am the Camera

What is the difference between a documentary gaze and one of an influencer on social media? How do they perceive reality? Are we forgetting the importance of content in favour of the gaze? We want to draw attention to a film that addresses one of the most crucial issues for our society today: image production and its subjectivisation. With great skill and humour, the film explores different times and points of view, starting from the historical camera that captured the moon landing and, seen through the lens of contemporary image production. A film that touches upon ownership and image production in our time and thus, opens an urgent discussion of which we all should participate.
(Jury’s statement of the category Artfilm, Frame Festival 2024, my translation)

Based on a site-specific engagement with the Hasselblad Memorial (known for the cameras used by NASA in the Apollo programme) at the public square Götaplatsen in the city of Gothenburg, the screen work I am the Camera (12:11 min) thematizes the human fascination and relationship with the camera. Through exploring the co-presence of three characters – Influencer, Documentary Filmmaker and Clown – and their technological devices, – Smart phone, Camcorder and GoPro – it stages an absurd interview with THE CAMERA that landed on the moon in 1969 and that forever flipped, humankind’s anthropocentric view of Earth.
