summer school udk berlin
From 19.08 until 23.08.24, I took part of the workshop “Visualising Territorial Digitalisation through Film” facilitated by the researcher Mirjana Mitrovic & documentary filmmaker Jan-Holger Hennies at the Summer School from the Universität der Künste Berlin (UDK). The main aim of the workshop was to engage with urban space through a feminist and post-colonial perspective, especially by creating connections between digitalization, urban life and spatial processes.
Since I lived in Berlin from 2004 until 2018, it was a great opportunity to me to engage again with the city, which unfortunately due to a high-speed gentrification process has become a sort of New York from Europe. Anyway, the workshop enabled me to produce a short film (06:00 min) entitled “A Walk through a mutilated piece of THE WALL” in which I performed together with my artist friend Anete Colacioppo a camera-walk at the East Side Gallery. More precisely, a walk from the margins of the river Spree through a piece of wall which was removed in favor of the so-called UBER Platz to the UBER Arena. In other words, a walk through layers of history of a divided city (from 1961 to 1989) and in these days, of a vibrant, touristic and highly contested place.
When we built the Arena, they thought everything was terrible. When we built the area around it, everyone complained that the Arena was no longer visible. It will take time! It's difficult to bring together a divided city that has developed so differently. Everyone enjoyed these empty spaces and the authenticity of the lost places. Many people wished that such open spaces would have been preserved, especially on the banks of the Spree at a time when the beach bar culture emerged, especially here at the East Side Gallery. None of this has happened. The West German idea has been completely superimposed on this romanticism of the lost places and we can see the result here today: it's shocking!
